6 of the best noughties outfits in Hustlers.

With its arrival on Amazon Prime I finally got to watch Hustlers at the weekend and let me tell you, the hustling I was most concerned with was how the hell the costume designer managed to pull together such an archive of noughties fashion candy.

Set in the early 2000s, Hustlers is a period piece, but quite different from the Austin era of bustles and corsets that we usually associate with the genre (there are still corsets, just not as you know them). Costume designer Mitchell Travers said he looked to the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Nicole Richie, Fergie and Destiny’s Child for inspiration. If, like me, you grew up in this era, you’ll have a soft spot for all this piled on glamour girl styling. Here are six of the finest looks from the film.

1. That Juicy Tracksuit

If anything defines noughties fashion it’s the velour tracksuit. Juicy Couture was the ultimate, and this scene towards the end of the film is the best celebration of the trend: Ramona wears a crown on her back while Lorde’s Royals plays over the scene.

2. Galliano’s newspaper print

I remember lusting after a Galliano newspaper print dress after seeing it on Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and The City. Here it is again, reminding me that I never got my hands on one and I also need to go back and binge on that NYC foursome.

3. The sexy choker

Coco Chanel said you should always take off the last piece of jewellery you’ve put on when getting ready, so you don’t over-accessorise. I don’t think anyone was listening in the noughties, it was the decade of wearing everything in your jewellery box ALL AT ONCE. Statement earrings and a statement necklace? Yes you can.

4. The white Louis Vuitton monogram bag

Another lust list item from my teens. I think it was even J-Lo herself that made me long for the Louis Vuitton monogram. White was the best, and the bigger the bag the better.

5. Fur and diamanté

A tad excessive, right? Perfect.

6. All white with a little reptile

This one deserves an honourable mention because it’s definitely something I’d wear now. Head to toe white is a favourite at the moment, as is a splash of animal print.
