I remember inviting all my friends to a Christmas party about seven years ago and stipulating that they all find an ugly Christmas jumper to wear.
That had us trawling eBay and Etsy for hand embellished sweaters and vintage jumpers (I found some legendarily flamboyant knits from America), and we all giggled at how ridiculous we looked and how ridiculous the world was for even considering these items as acceptable clothing. But fast forward a couple of years, and suddenly they’re the standard staple for December.
But the Christmas jumper has certainly had an upgrade over the last few years. It only has to be ugly if you want it to be, and it can actually be, dare I say it, rather chic and beautiful. But what was once a novelty that we could all have a giggle at, is perhaps now in danger of becoming redundant. Christmas jumpers are everywhere, every shop is expected to stock them as soon as you can feel the slightest inkling of festive spirit, and they don’t feel like the novelty they once were.
But if you’re still a Christmas jumper fan, relish in the trend and grab your festive knit this year while you still can, especially this Friday, which has been declared National Christmas Jumper Day.
But don’t expect it to last much longer, all good things must come to an end, right?
Here are a few festive finds if you’re in need of some inspiration…
