The Lisbon Sister – The Virgin Suicides inspired look

I first found The Virgin Suicides when I was about 16. For some reason, I’ve always been drawn to the macabre (I grew up listening to Radiohead), and I was entranced by the dreamy, romantic vision of these five sisters and their beautifully sad story. Although it was the first feature for director Sofia Coppola, she expertly entices you with this heavenly world of babydoll dresses, ruffles, lace, unkempt hair and untidy teenage bedrooms. The sisters are given an ethereal, almost otherworldly quality, and as the story is told through the eyes of the adolescent boys who live across the street, it’s a fitting picture of the girls they will never really come to understand.

After growing up with the film I finally read the original book by Jeffrey Eugenides last year. I wish I hadn’t waited so long. It’s one of the most beautiful tales of the fragility of youth, it makes you feel, which is exactly what I want from a book and the big screen.

So without further ado, I’m declaring LauLauLand open with my first film-style inspired post. Here’s my The Virgin Suicides look…

Dress | Topshop

Gorgeous photos, everything here just captures Coppola’s ethereal, dream-like world so well. Also loved the concept behind this post, look forward to seeing what look you recreate next 🙂

  2. Love the concept of this blog and very much looking forward to more.

Like the twist of the bucolic imagery created from a macabre source. And yeh the “nightie” is gorgeous.

Not read the book but remember the film as a how not why movie. It’s now on my list.

    Thank you Laura

    1. Heather that is music to my ears! The film definitely creates such beauty out of such tragedy, I’m so pleased you thought my photos had a similar vibe. Let me know what you think when you do read the book, it has gone on my favourites list!
